Three YMCA’s, One Goal: More Shade

How Atlantic Coast Shade tackled three unique installations across three YMCA’s in Charlotte, NC.
When the YMCA of Greater Charlotte came to us across multiple branches, each project presented completely different challenges. Same organization, same goal: to protect kids from the sun. Three distinct spaces, three different shade solutions, three creative approaches… Here's how we tackled each one.
Harris YMCA- Playground Protection
Anyone with kids in Charlotte knows the Harris YMCA runs one of the city's busiest after-school programs and summer camps, meaning their playground sees heavy use during some of the hottest parts of the day. The problem? In Charlotte's hot and humid summer climate, temperatures can reach into the 90s and 100s — seriously hot for playing children. The playground's metal components were absorbing heat in the direct sun, making surfaces dangerously hot.
The goal was clear: maximum shade coverage for these kids. But getting there wasn't a simple task.
For this project, we selected The Seabrook- one of our largest freestanding commercial shade structures. This sleek design is known for its ability to cover wide, open areas with shade, without requiring posts inside the play zone. The necessary posts were installed a safe distance from the playground, ensuring they wouldn't be a hindrance. We matched the fabric color to the playground's existing blue palette with the goal of creating a cohesive look that felt intentional rather than added-on.
However, the installation came with a unique obstacle: to properly install the structure, we had to remove a section of the existing playground equipment- a plastic umbrella on top of the structure. It's the kind of challenge that requires careful coordination and a detailed plan of action.
But the result was worth it! Commercial shade fabric reduces temperatures underneath by up to 20°F. A meaningful difference between a playground that's unusable and one that's safe and comfortable for every child. The Seabrook's steel framework carries a lifetime warranty, making it a long-term solution rather than a seasonal fix. The right shade structure isn’t just about blocking the hot sun- it’s about making a space usable again.

Keith YMCA- Fabric Quality Matters
Not every shade project starts from scratch. At the Keith YMCA, the ball fields already had existing shade structures in place- but the fabric had reached the end of its life. Aging poorly, visibly deteriorating, structurally unreliable, and no longer providing the coverage the facility needed.
This scenario is more common than most people realize. Fabric is the hardest-working and most important component of any shade structure. It bears the burden of not only UV exposure, but rain, varied temperatures, and wind all year round. Low-grade fabric fails quickly, and failing fabric doesn't just look bad, it undermines the entire purpose of the installation.
The Keith YMCA team came to us knowing they needed a professional upgrade. They chose Atlantic Coast Shade specifically for our commercial-grade fabric backed by a 15-year warranty- one of the strongest in the industry.
Once we replaced the worn canopies with bright, bold colors, the look of the ball fields was entirely transformed! What had become an eyesore became a functional statement, proving that a well-executed fabric replacement can look and feel like a brand-new installation.
Key takeaway for facility managers and businesses: If your shade structure framework is sound but your fabric is aging, or even if you simply want to reinvent your space with a new color- a fabric replacement is a cost-effective way to extend the life of your investment without a full overhaul.

Simmons YMCA — Shade Sails as Creative Architecture
The Simmons YMCA project was our favorite kind of challenge: a blank canvas with a specific vision. Their after-school program needed a shaded outdoor classroom- a space where kids could learn and gather outside without the hindrance of the sun.
The location featured a colorful painted wall mural, and we wanted the shade solution to complement it rather than compete with it. We used layered shade sails to maximize sun protection and chose bright blue and orange colors to match the mural's palette.
Shade sails are triangular or quadrilateral fabric panels that are tensioned between anchor points, and their effectiveness is directly tied to the angle of installation. We deliberately oriented the sails to maximize overlap and minimize gaps. Shade sail layering isn't just aesthetic, it's functional.
We also had a structural advantage at Simmons: solid brick walls that allowed us to use direct wall mounts as anchor points. Wall mounting eliminates the need for freestanding posts, simplifying the installation and keeping the outdoor classroom open and unobstructed.
The finished space feels less like a shade structure and more like an outdoor classroom. Colorful, purposeful, and completely transformed.

No two commercial shade projects are the same. Although all three projects were for the same organization, each project had its different objectives and processes. In addition to these projects, we work with other YMCA’s to provide shade at pools, outdoor workout areas, camps, outdoor eating areas, and much more. If your Southeast outdoor space is dealing with sun and heat, aging shade fabric, or isn't being used to its full potential, we'd love to talk you through the options. Every project starts with a free estimate.
